Fidel Castro Dies at the Age of 90

Fidel Castro, Cuban leader and revolutionary dies at the age of 90 according to Cuban state media. It provided no further information.

Fidel Castro, born on August 13, 1926 was a Cuban revolutionary and ruled the country for almost half a century. His supporters praised him as a man who had given Cuba back to the people. But his opponents accused him of brutally suppressing opposition.

Castro was able to avoid multiple assassination attempts during his lifetime.

Castro retired in 2008. Following his retirement, Castro’s health started to deteriorate. International press speculated that he had diverticulitis, but Cuba’s government refused to corroborate this.

In April of 2016, Fidel Castro gave a rare speech on the final day of the country’s Communist Party congress. He acknowledged his advanced age but said Cuban communist concepts were still valid and the Cuban people “will be victorious”.
