EV child labor committee discusses protection for child laborers

ORMOC CITY — The member-agencies of the Eastern Visayas Regional Child Labor Committee (EVRCLC) discussed in a meeting on October 6, Friday some issues and concerns for the welfare of child laborers in the region.

The last activity of EVRCLC was in 2012 which was the drafting of a memorandum of agreement for the intensified, sustained, and unified implementation of Philippine Program Against Child Labor in Eastern Visayas Region.

The OIC-Assistant Regional Director (ARD) of DOLE 8, Atty. Roy L. Buenafe, presided the RCLC meeting in Ormoc City, hoping to make the RCLC alive again by reconstituting its membership and structure.

Further, Atty. Buenafe asked the representatives of the RCLC member-agencies to intensify their child labor-related development programs to help reduce or eliminate the said problem in the region.

He also pointed out the reaffirmation and appraisal of the commitment of the EVRCLC member-agencies on the drafted 2012 MOA to  be fited into their present programs and interventions.

They lined-up the following activities for the upcoming National Children’s Month Celebration in November:

  • MOA signing of the heads of the EVRCLC member-agencies of the intensified, sustained, and unified implementation of Philippine Program Against Child Labor in EV;
  • Gift-giving to the identified child laborers in the barangay of Rizal and Tugbong in Kananga and in Sumanga and Patag in Ormoc City tagged as “Pasko sa Nobyembre”;
  • The national launching of IEC materials for the Strategic Helpdesk for Information, Education, Livelihood and other Developmental Interventions (SHIELD) Project;
  • The DSWD 8 children-related activities.

The tentative date for these activities is set on November 29, 2017, in Ormoc City. It will be finalized during the meeting of the EVRCLC member-agencies this coming November 3, 2017.
