Calbiga, Samar’s Langun Gobingob Cave

Samar is tagged as the caving capital of the country; there are lots of cave systems that you can explore in Samar. One of the pristine cave systems in this province is the Langun Gobingob Cave of Calbiga, Samar which is situated in Barangay Panayuran of the municipality.

It is the largest cave system in the Philippines, the second largest in Asia, and the world’s third largest karst formation which is seven-kilometer long with an area of 900 square km. The cave was first explored in 1987 by the Italian speleologist team with eight members. The main cave has a chamber with a size of three football fields.

How to get there

You have to travel first to Tacloban City, Leyte if you are from outside of Samar Provinces. Once you reach  Tacloban City, you have to ride a van or bus bound for Catbalogan, Samar, and tell the driver to drop you at the Calbiga, Samar town center. the travel time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Tips!

  • You can explore the cave anytime but except during bad weather.
  • You have to wear comfortable clothes.
  • Wear trekking shoes.
  • Don’t wear slippers or flip flops; it will not help you.
  • Bring your foods and snacks.
  • Bring an extra set of clothes.
